Bay Street Breakfast Club

President's Message PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Bay Street Breakfast Club website!

Our club provides an enthusiastic and supportive environment for all members to learn and develop speaking and leadership skills. Our aim is for all our members to be engaged and reach for high quality in everything they do at our meetings.

You may be asking yourself these questions:

What can I expect to learn from Toastmasters?

  • To overcome much of your nervousness in public speaking.
  • To improve your public speaking skills – if you apply yourself. This is both for written / rehearsed speeches and of-the-cuff speaking (such as you would have in an elevator conversation).
  • To improve your ability to listen actively, write clearly, craft effective speeches, perform a variety of leadership and organization skills, and give constructive evaluations of the speeches of other club members.
What will change for me if I were a member for a while?
Toastmasters members who fully embrace the opportunities usually gain increased self confidence and greatly improved communication skills. This often results in positive changes in other aspects of our lives.

How can this happen?
It starts with the Toastmasters International materials and standards which have been refined over eight decades. The clubs tend to bring out the best in people, in an atmosphere of support, teaching one another, putting to good use the experience of all, and fellowship.

How can I find out if Toastmasters is for me, and how do I choose a club?
You are welcome to attend meetings as a guest at any number of clubs, and at each club you can attend as often as you like to find out whether a club feels like a good fit for you. You can take as much time as you need to find out whether you would like to become a member and where.

What is it like to be a member of Bay Street Breakfast Club?
Our club boasts a great diversity of members in terms of Toastmasters experience, cultural background, professional background and personality. We are sticklers for timeliness, organization and efficiency. Supported by this bit of structure the mood in our meetings is relaxed, friendly and joyful. Our members reach for quality in their roles at the meetings and we leave energized with a positive outlook on the day ahead.

What is expected of me?
Working with our VP Education you will be included in our published quarterly schedule of meeting activities. This identifies if you will be giving a speech, an evaluation, acting as Toastmaster or other duties. If you have a duty for that meeting and your schedule changes, it is your responsibility to find a replacement for yourself. The more you are involved, the faster will be your growth. Each person will have their own personal goals though - our VP education will help you to shape your training experience.

What does membership cost?
The membership fee at BSBC is $100 per year (or about $2 a meeting) and collected in September. If you join in the middle of the year the fee is pro-rated. And if you have never been a toastmaster member anywhere there is a one-time $25 fee for the start-up kit, which includes the Competent Communicator and the Competent Leader manuals.

Who are the members of your club?
Our club was founded in 1990. We have new members join throughout each year (sometimes via a waiting list). We have members who have been with us anywhere from a few months to a few years and more, up to the three founding members who still attend regularly.

The Bay Street Breakfast Club was started by Scotiabank employees and the Bank supports us with free meeting space, yet we have been an open club from the start, and it is this that brings us even greater diversity and liveliness.
